The
Tomb of Tutankhamun, KV62, is the most famous burial site in
the world due to the fabulous treasures which were found
intact. The tomb and its great treasures had not been
ravaged by tomb raiders due to its location which was
underneath the remains of the huts of workmen which were
built during nineteenth dynasty. The tomb is accessed by a
staircase which leads to a series of corridors and chambers
which are decorated with
scenes from the 'Opening of the Mouth' ritual and the
Amduat, a magical text which would help the
pharaoh through the perils of the Underworld so he could

The Valley of the Kings is a necropolis. A
necropolis is defined as a large cemetery
or burial place near the site of a center of an ancient civilization.
The Valley of the Kings, where the Tomb of Tutankhamun was found, is located near the
Ancient Egyptian city of Thebes (now modern-day Luxor). There are 63
tombs which have been discovered in the Valley of the Kings belonging to
the Pharaohs and leading dignitaries. Many of the tombs were discovered
by the Egyptian tomb robbers of antiquity but during the 19th and 20th
centuries renewed interest in Egyptology led European Egyptologists,
such as Howard Carter, to
make further excavations in the Valley of the Kings, hoping to find
undiscovered tombs, complete with
fabulous treasures.
