Biography and accomplishments or why
Ramses XI
was famous: A long and chaotic reign with civil disorder, lack of
security and grave robberies by Syrian raiders in the Valley of the
Kings. Egypt had become impossible to rule for the Pharaoh who was
forced to form a triumvirate consisting of himself, and two military
commanders. Herihor ruled Thebes and Upper Egypt and Smendes ruled in
Lower Egypt. The two military commanders eventually gained more power
than the Pharaoh leading to Civil war in the country. Nubia and its
wealth of gold was finally lost to the Egyptians. Middle and Upper Egypt
were effectively controlled by the High Priests of Amun at Thebes. When
Ramses XI died he was succeeded by Smendes. The Ramesside era of
Egyptian history had ended with Ramses XI. The village of Deir El
Medina, where the royal tomb workers lived, was abandoned because
Smendes moved the location of the Royal Necropolis to his home town of
Tanis. This period was officially called the Era of the Renaissance or
Whm Mswt by Egyptians.
