disagreements about the exact location of the Biblical Mount Sinai the
traditional and most accepted location of Mount Sinai is in the middle
of the Sinai Peninsula, Egypt. For those wishing to travel to this part
of Egypt transport is by road or air. The nearest city is Dehab which is
is two hours away from Mount Sinai by car. There is no airport at Dahab
so the route is from Cairo to Sharm el sheikh which is only 1 hour to
Dahab.

Mount Sinai
Mount Sinai in Egypt is 7000 feet high and is also known as Mount
Moses. Part of a mountain range it is surrounded on all sides by higher
peaks of other mountains including St Catherine's Mountain. Mount Sinai
is a famous and spiritual place, especially for Christians. Events

Moses first heard the word of God from the burning bush when he was told
to deliver his people from bondage in Egypt. Moses returned to Egypt and
the Pharaoh eventually agreed to release the people following the ten
plagues which were set on the Egyptians. The peak of the mountain is
where Moses communicated with God and received the Ten Commandments. The
Ten Commandments were placed in the ark of the covenant, which was one
of many instructions Moses received on the mountain. Steps are cut into
the side of the mountain and this is
followed by the pilgrims who make this journey. A Greek Orthodox Chapel
has been built on the top of Mt. Sinai.

Catherine's Monastery
St. Catherine's Monastery (aka the Monastery of the Transfiguration) was
built by members of the Greek Orthodox Church. It is the oldest
monastery on earth and has been a centre of pilgrimage for 15 centuries.
The monastery is fortified, surrounded by a high wall, and until only
recent times the only entrance was via a basket and rope over the wall.
St. Catherine's Monastery holds one of the largest and most important
collection of illuminated manuscripts in the world which are written in
a variety of languages.
