Cairo - The Babylon
Fort
The earliest known settlement in
Cairo was at the Babylon Fort built by the Persians in the 6th century
BC. The first records of the city date back to the Roman conquest of
Egypt. In 31 BC the Roman Emperor Octavian defeated Antony and Cleopatra
in the sea Battle of Actium and in 30 BC Egypt became a province of the
Roman Empire which stretched from 30BC to 641 AD. A Roman fort was
built on the site of the Babylon fort.
